Connections are living systems
An integration is rarely finished the day an API request succeeds. Schemas change, credentials rotate, providers fail and operational expectations evolve. Durable connectivity needs ownership of the contract and visibility into the surrounding lifecycle.
A coherent surface for difference
Platforms should not require every upstream service to speak the same protocol. A deliberate integration layer can mediate standards, expose stable interfaces and isolate backend choices. The goal is fewer accidental dependencies, not hiding every difference under a generic abstraction.
Events deserve equal attention
Synchronous APIs are one part of the picture. Webhooks, asynchronous events and eventual consistency often carry the more complicated operational work. A mature connectivity strategy models delivery, retries, idempotency and observation explicitly.
The operating principle
Make integrations understandable, observable and replaceable. The best connector is the one you can still operate after the first deployment.
Technology for what’s next.
