Beyond the human account

In connected environments, identities extend far beyond employees and customers. Machines, workloads and automated agents perform operations on behalf of people and organizations. Each needs a reliable principal, scoped permissions and an accountable lifecycle.

Separate authentication from authority

Knowing who or what made a request is necessary, but not sufficient. Authentication establishes identity; authorization decides whether a particular action is permitted in context. Treating those concerns as distinct keeps systems adaptable while making policy boundaries easier to inspect.

Reduce exposure by design

Credentials should be managed as sensitive capabilities with deliberate lifetimes. A good architecture favors delegation and constrained use over indiscriminate copying of secrets. Logging, approval and evidence practices must be designed without turning telemetry into another secret store.

The operating principle

Put identity, policy and credential lifecycle at the center of the design so every product can build on the same trust vocabulary.
